The Room

Marsha Burks Megehee

There's a room in my heart
Where nobody goes
Not husband, not child
The door's always closed

There's a black granite wall
All covered with names
When I open the door
I hear jungle rains

I see lonely faces
I hear Mothers' cries
Far off sounds of battle
Faint helpless sighs

But in a small corner
A bright candle glows
It never goes out
Why? God only knows

Some days I won't go there
I can't find my way
Then I remember you
My POW/MIA

My room is your prison
The bars hold me fast
Our hearts somehow bonded
With wrong from our past

You don't know my name
Though I wear yours each day
My room holds this prayer
Dear God, Free him today!
